Nearby Experiences

Daviess County puts visitors in the heart of history and natural beauty with several visitor experiences just a short drive away.

Hoosier National Forest

At more than 200,000 acres, the Hoosier National Forest comprises roughly half of Indiana’s public forest land, and while stewardship is a primary mission here, more than 260 miles of trails—including more than a dozen trails designed to accommodate hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding—create abundant recreational opportunities. The forest is also home to the Charles C. Deam Wilderness Area, the state’s only remaining recognized wilderness area.

George Rogers Clark National Historic Park

The park honors the Revolutionary War commander who led American troops and French frontiersmen through freezing floodwaters to capture Fort Sackville at Vincennes in 1779. Nestled on the banks of the Wabash River in Vincennes, the stately monument that is the park’s centerpiece is a graceful domed and columned structure. Inside, an imposing bronze statue of Clark stands surrounded by a dramatic seven-panel mural depicting the expedition and battle. At the visitor center, exhibitions and the 30-minute movie “Long Knives” provide engaging education on the subject.

French Lick and West Baden

French Lick has always drawn crowds, first as a French trading post built near a salt lick, then later in the second half of the 19th century as a source of healing through its sulfur springs. By the turn of the 20th century, it had become an elegant resort and spa town, home to two world-famous luxury hotels—French Lick Springs Hotel and West Baden Springs Hotel.

Today, visitors can still opt for that luxurious retreat and spa experience at the historic and glamorous hotels, but crowds are also flocking to more affordable options—cabins, cottages, B&Bs, plus RV and tent camping. And while visitors of the past looked to the healing sulfur springs, today’s visitors know that great recreation can also cure what ails you. Biking and hiking, horseback riding, lake recreation, outdoor swimming and an indoor water park, a 4,000-ft. zip line canopy tour that never touches the ground, 45 holes of great golf, and more. Twenty-mile day tours on the French Lick Scenic Railway take passengers through the Hoosier National Forest, Burton Tunnel, and past dramatic limestone outcroppings. And those looking for a shopping adventure will be well rewarded with the unique creations of an active artisan community.
